Novel hierarchical yolk-shell

Xiqing Luo, Miaomiao Jiang, Kun Shi, Zhangxian Chen, Zeheng Yang, Weixin Zhang

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 15, Issue 5,   Pages 1322-1331 doi: 10.1007/s11705-021-2036-z

Abstract: For high performance supercapacitors, novel hierarchical yolk-shell -Ni(OH) /Mn O microspheres were controllably synthesized using a facile two-step method based on the solvothermal treatment. The unique -Ni(OH) based yolk-shell microstructures decorated with numerous interconnected nanosheets and the hetero-composition features can synergistically enhance reactive site exposure and electron conduction within the microspheres, facilitate charge transfer between electrolyte and electrode materials, and release structural stress during OH chemisorption/desorption. Moreover, the Mn O sediments distributed over the -Ni(OH) microspheres can serve as an effective protective layer for electrochemical reactions. Consequently, when tested in 1 mol·L KOH aqueous electrolyte for supercapacitors, the yolk-shell -Ni(OH) /Mn O microspheres exhibited a considerably high specific capacitance of 2228.6 F·g at 1 A·g and an impressive capacitance retention of 77.7% after 3000 cycles at 10 A·g . The proposed -Ni(OH) /Mn O microspheres with hetero-composition and unique hierarchical yolk-shell microstructures are highly promising to be used as electrode materials in supercapacitors and other energy storage devices.

Testing of tuberculosis infection among Chinese adolescents born after terminating the Bacillus Calmette--Guérin booster vaccination: subgroup analysis of a population-based cross-sectional study

Frontiers of Medicine 2017, Volume 11, Issue 4,   Pages 528-535 doi: 10.1007/s11684-017-0573-0

Abstract:

The prevalence of tuberculosis infection among adolescents born after terminating the Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) booster vaccination in China was estimated using tuberculin skin testing (TST) and QuantiFERON-TB Gold assay (QFT) to investigate the influence of neonatal BCG vaccination on the performance of TST. Data analysis was conducted for 2831 eligible participants aged 5–15 years from the baseline survey of a population-based multi-center prospective study. The prevalence rates of TST (induration≥10 mm) and QFT positivity were 9.3% (264/2827) and 2.5% (71/2831), respectively. The rate of QFT indeterminate result was 2.2% (62/2831). The overall agreement between TST and QFT was low (concordance= 88.0%; κ coefficient= 0.125). Only TST was positively associated with BCG vaccination with an adjusted odds ratio of 1.71 [95% confidence interval, 1.26–2.31]. A history of close contact with patients of active TB was significantly associated with positivity for TST and QFT. Our results suggested that BCG neonatal vaccination still affects TST performance, and a two-step approach might be considered for TB infection testing among adolescents in China.

Anti-β2GPI/β2GPI complexes induce platelet activation and promote thrombosis via p38MAPK: a pathway to targeted therapies

Frontiers of Medicine 2019, Volume 13, Issue 6,   Pages 680-689 doi: 10.1007/s11684-018-0673-5

Abstract: Anti- glycoprotein I (anti- GPI) antibodies are important contributors to the development of thrombosis. Anti- GPI antibody complexes with GPI are well known to activate monocytes and endothelial cells via the intracellular NF- B pathway with prothrombotic implications. By contrast, the interaction of anti- GPI/ GPI complexes with platelets has not been extensively studied. The p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway has been recognized to be an important intracellular signaling pathway in the coagulation cascade and an integral component of arterial and venous thrombosis. The present study reveals that levels of anti- GPI/ GPI complexes in sera are positively associated with p38MAPK phosphorylation of platelets in thrombotic patients. Furthermore, SB203580 inhibits anti- GPI/ GPI complex-induced platelet activation. Thrombus formation decreased in mice after treatment with anti- GPI/ GPI complexes. In conclusion, p38MAPK may be a treatment target for anti- GPI antibody-associated thrombotic events.

Phase separation in cGAS-STING signaling

Frontiers of Medicine   Pages 855-866 doi: 10.1007/s11684-023-1026-6

Abstract: Biomolecular condensates formed by phase separation are widespread and play critical roles in many physiological and pathological processes. cGAS-STING signaling functions to detect aberrant DNA signals to initiate anti-infection defense and antitumor immunity. At the same time, cGAS-STING signaling must be carefully regulated to maintain immune homeostasis. Interestingly, exciting recent studies have reported that biomolecular phase separation exists and plays important roles in different steps of cGAS-STING signaling, including cGAS condensates, STING condensates, and IRF3 condensates. In addition, several intracellular and extracellular factors have been proposed to modulate the condensates in cGAS-STING signaling. These studies reveal novel activation and regulation mechanisms of cGAS-STING signaling and provide new opportunities for drug discovery. Here, we summarize recent advances in the phase separation of cGAS-STING signaling and the development of potential drugs targeting these innate immune condensates.

Deep-seated Rupture Zone—a New Seismotectonic Style

Li Yuanjun

Strategic Study of CAE 2006, Volume 8, Issue 4,   Pages 12-18

Abstract:

In hydraulic engineering, deep-seated rupture zones have been discovered in some dam areas, such as Heishanxia of Huanghe River, Jinpingshan of Yalongjiang River and others. It is a new geological structure phenomenon. deep-seated rupture zones are usually situated in the pleistoseismic generating faults. Historic earthguakes frequently occur along the active structure zone. Deep seated rupture zones are 300 m or more beneath the surface, far exceeding the depth of surface unloading range. They are bound up with the dynamics effect of rock mass during earthquake happening. This paper discussed the seismologic reasons for the occurrence of deep seated rupture zones according to elastic wave kinetics.
